Tips For Becoming A Successful Professional Architectural Photographer

By Peter Cox

With today's technology and the importance of social media, it sometimes seems like everyone is a photographer. The majority of the photos posted online are completely amateurish and awkward. There is a certain segment of the population however that understands the best photos are works of art and taking them combines elements of skill, knowledge, and talent. If you have an interest in camera lenses, angles, and structures, you might be someone who makes a career as an architectural photographer.

If you own a cell phone, you could probably take a picture anywhere and anytime you want. When you are learning the art of photography however, you are going to need better and more sophisticated equipment. You will also have to learn how it works. Instead of going out and buying the most expensive camera you can find, it is a better idea to start with something fundamental and affordable. Even these cameras have a multitude of options you can experiment with.

It certainly isn't a requirement to have a four year college degree to become a photography professional, but many potential clients prefer to hire someone they consider educated and experienced in their craft. Even if you have natural talent, taking courses in composition, lighting, structure, color technique, and the history of photography will give you the background and confidence to succeed.

You won't get far without having a professional portfolio to show your potential clients. Photography is a visual art form, and that should be reflected in the pieces you include. As you gain experience, you will probably want to change the photos you show to clients. You can even tailor your portfolio to the type of job interview you have scheduled.

The tradition of young artists apprenticing themselves to older, more mature, and experienced craftsmen has passed. In its place, today's young professionals tend to become assistants to successful and admired craftsmen willing to spend the time as mentors. If you are smart, you will soak up all the knowledge you can. It will be invaluable when you set out on your independent career.

One of the best ways to get ahead in any career is by networking. You should consider joining community organizations, becoming active in professional associations, and increasing your name recognition by volunteering whenever appropriate. Becoming active in organizations comprised of other photographers will stimulate your creativity.

The most successful people continue to learn and grow throughout their careers and lives. It is important to be open to new ideas and the progression of technology. If you get complacent, younger and more ambitious professionals will take your place. Sitting in on college courses is a great way to stay current.

You may not become a household name as a photographer of buildings, but you can have a successful career and make a good living. If you like to travel and don't mind spending hours on your feet, taking pictures of architectural structures around the world might be for you. You will certainly have plenty of stories to tell along the way.
