How To Start A California Apparel Photography Company

By Diane Fisher

If you want to create compelling, appealing clothing photos, there are some steps that you must follow. This business is booming especially in big cities. Therefore, to make your business better and more appealing, you have to be unique. In this kind of business, imaging with live models can make your clothes look more attractive. This is because live models give the clothes a level of shape and character that make the photo shoot amazing. Therefore, if you want to start your own California apparel photography company, use the following guidelines.

To start with, you must secure a business permit from your local government. There are some requirements that you must meet for you to be given the permit. These requirements tend to be different in each state. Hence, make sure you know what your state requires and obtain a permit to open the business. More so, make sure that you have insured the business.

After you obtain the license, insurance, and permit, you can now start operating the business. Since it is a photo shooting company you will be running, you must look for perfect live models to make the clothes you will be shooting look stunning. Also, you must be very selective about the models. Thus, the clothes must fit them well, and the models must look attractive in those clothes.

Once you have selected the model that you want, start setting up your space. The space you choose will depend on the situation. More so, space should be large enough for the model to move around when following your cues. However, space should not be too large. Therefore, you have to designate backdrop boundaries so that the model stays in the frame.

Lighting is crucial for shooting. If there will be no enough light, the images will be dull. If the light is too bright, the photos will appear faded. Therefore, make sure you come up with a way to mimic the natural window light and its softness. Most photographers prefer using soft boxes, umbrellas and speed lights. Nevertheless, speed lights tend to be too bright, direct and harsh.

Once everything is in place and you have achieved the right lighting, make sure the model is in position. Make them stand the way you want. Illustrate the standard positions and explain to them how you want your vision to be. Place an X on the surface directly in front of the camera and tell the models to stand there.

You can then start shooting with wide framing and crop the images later. Wide framing shooting will leave enough spaces on all sides. These spaces will allow you to crop and size the photo the way you want. Ensure that you direct your models to do all the standard poses that you want.

After the shooting, start your post-production project. This takes quite some time thus ensure that you allocate some time to this project. You can either edit the images on your own or outsource labor to make work easier for you. Make sure you hire a professional to do the editing if you are outsourcing.
