Useful Information Regarding Florida Keys Aerial Photography

By Timothy Butler

Aerial photography is a vital field in the profession of photography. The other term that is used in reference to this profession is airborne imagery. Airborne imagery is the process of taking pictures from a flying object like a drone or airplane. Platforms which are currently used commonly include kites, rockets, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, balloons, pigeons, and parachutes just to point out a few. This is worth knowing about Florida Keys aerial photography.

The photos may be taken by a person aboard the various airborne platforms. However, if the platform cannot be boarded by a human being, then the cameras used are triggered automatically or remotely. Airborne imagery and air to air photography are two different ideas because of the manner in which photos in the two concepts are taken. In air-to-air imagery, photos of airborne platforms such as aircrafts, rockets, balloons among others are taken by another airborne platform.

There are some factors that determine how pictures taken from the atmospshere can be categorized. If the pictures are captured from an angle, then they are called oblique pictures. If the angle relative to the ground is low, then the term low oblique photos is used to describe the photos taken. On the contrary, if the angle is high, then the photos are referred to as high or steep oblique photos.

Another group of photos is referred to as vertical photos. These are photos that are taken straight down. Photos of this kind are commonly taken to be used for image interpretation and photogrammetry. Photos that are used in photogrammetry are usually taken using special large format cameras. Cameras of these kind are usually have calibrated and documented geometric properties.

Vertical pictures are used in the production of orthophotos. The other term in reference to orthophotos is orthophotomaps. These are images which have been geometrically rectified so that they may be used as maps. To better understand orthophotos, is to look at it as a simulation of snap shots captured from infinite distance, viewing straight down. Perspective is normally removed in the photographs while variations in terrain are rectified.

The field of aerial photography is attached to a long history that started in France. Gdpard-Felix Tournachon was the first individual to experiment with taking shots from the air. Tournchon was a balloonist and a photographer. Therefore, the individual chose to capture shots of the earth from the air. Tournachon used cameras which were installed on a balloon and flown above Paris.

The idea of taking aerial photographs would later become very popular with the onset of the First World War. Both the Germans and Britons used their planes to conduct surveillance of enemy troops. The pictures that were taken at that time were in black and white colors only. This made them to be of low quality. Also, since the cameras used were not powerful enough, the altitude at which the photos could be taken was limited.

Currently, the field of airborne imagery is very developed. It is applicable in a lot of fields, including research, military, aeronautical, film making, recreation, and music among others. Today, the equipment used are more advanced and safer too.
